CONSERVATION

OUR PROJECTS

Nature Eastern Townships (NET) is carrying out conservation projects in several  locations in its territory of operation, which covers the upper watershed of the Saint-François River. In addition to the Johnville Bog and Racey Brook, for which the organization was created, two major forest massifs are targeted: the Stoke Mountains and the Mont-Mégantic mountain massif. These areas benefit from continuous cover forestry and offer habitats that meet the needs of wildlife species requiring a large home range, such as the black bear, bobcat, moose, or fisher. In addition, NET is a privileged partner of the City of Sherbrooke regarding the conservation of natural environments of interest on the City’s territory.

Through its conservation activities, NET aims to ensure, by means of moral or legal agreements, the long-term or perpetual protection of natural environments of ecological interest in the Eastern Townships region.  Other approaches are also being utilized, such as the promotion of natural resource use practices that are compatible with the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystems.

Johnville Bog and Racey Brook

In the past, part of the peat bog belonged to the Borough of Lennoxville which, through several land acquisitions in the 20th century, pursued the objective of securing its drinking water supply.
